IVF Update

I've been tardy with this, but basically it didn't happen. We'll be trying again after Conflux. I was hoping that murasaki_1966 would have a less stressful job by now, but hopefully she'll be treating her current job with more equanimity.

I feel like I'm mourning the death of a ghost.

Call of Cthulhu

is a must watch, not just for Lovecraft fanboys, but really anyone interested in independent cinema.

I thought it was going to be not much more than a filmed record of a Cthulhu LARP, shot in black and white with captions added. It is, after all, produced by the H P Lovecraft Historical Society.

No, no, no. It's a real, honest to goodness adaptation of Call of Cthulhu done as a silent film, using, as much as possible, the techniques and effects of the time. It's not just a labour of love, it's a wonderful evocation of the joys of silent cinema. The acting is marvellous, as well as the astonishing attention to detail. Eventually I stopped picking my jaw off the floor at the incredible attention paid to replicating a film made in the twenties (complete with exteriors!) as I got immersed in the story, and the overall evocation of dread.

And it's certainly the most faithful Lovecraft adaptation ever made.
