Don Watson elegantly argues my position on Peter Costello in today's SMH (may require registration, sorry.)
I believe there's great danger in disposing of Howard as leader (whether by assassination, or other less legitimate means) if it means that Costello or Abbott is going to fill the vacuum (what I used to call "The Dan Quayle defence", but now call "The Dick Cheney defence".)
