My word for today
(It pays to increase my word power - I'm trying to make a conscious effort now to look up words I don't understand as soon as I come across them)
Autochthonic - adj : originating where it is found; "the autochthonal fauna of Australia includes the kangaroo"; "autochthonous rocks and people and folktales"; "endemic folkways"; "the Ainu are indigenous to the northernmost islands of Japan" [syn: autochthonal, autochthonous, endemic, indigenous]

I really should put in an example of usage just to aid my comprehension - for example: John Howard demonstrated his party's authochthonic disdain for human rights.

I'm reading Stephen Donaldson at the mo, so various examples are coming to light. Abysm being one I remember from last night.

(and I'm ashamed of how long it took me to decipher it)
Still, Donaldson did make his main character a cripple before it became fashionable in real literature, so it must be art!
