I've wondered previously if in a few hundred years time we'll have "Talk Like a Terrorist Day". Or perhaps "Talk Like a US President Day"? :D

There's a point in third PotC movie where you're clearly supposed to going, "Yay, Pirates! Making the oceans free!" but you're actually going "Yay, Pirates! Making the oceans free for theft, rape, murder and...wait, hang on."

"Mass-organised opportunities to “do something different”, like "International Talk Like a Pirate Day, are just another way in which peer-pressure is deployed to make people conform to certain group behaviours. Yes, you can have fun in your life — but only this kind of fun. And only today."

what a crock. Who is being *made* to do anything? Why *only* this kind of fun? why *only* today? Should I get upset when a bunch of people wish me happy birthday because everyone is conforming to peer group pressure and demanding I do it too?

yes, real pirates are bad, same as real faeries are scary and real witches were unpopular women (rather than perky teenagers in crop tops). Doesn't mean we shouldn't be allowed to play with the form.

and no, I'm not personally participating in talk like a pirate day. Can't be bothered.

I agree that the whole pirates as romantic figure meme is very selective, but ITAP is harmless fun, and a chance for coordinated silliness.

Stilgherrian would miss out on all coordinated and social silliness, by his argument.

As will I. Because I'm not a fan of "coordinated and social silliness" (kind of misses the point of silliness as far as I'm concerned.)

I'd agree with his point if he didn't feel the need to be such a smug asshole about it. Does he also think people who go to church or attend football games or go to the movies suffer the same problem?

[identity profile] jack-ryder.livejournal.com 2008-09-19 05:07 am (UTC)(link)
Well, he is a smug asshole from what I can tell (to a point.) But to unpack the argument a little:

If you choose to go a football game, or church, or watch Biodome, fine. If you expect me to do the same because you do it, not fine.

I guess I'd be a little more accepting if it was "Talk like Robert Newton" day but I still have a problem with this stratified unconformity.

Should I get upset when a bunch of people wish me happy birthday because everyone is conforming to peer group pressure and demanding I do it too?

I'd be pissed off if people demanded I wish myself a happy birthday. "Go on - we want to hear it from your lips."

Though I'm happy to start "Talk like a Faerie" day, if only I knew what the bastards sounded like.

I think we should have Talk Like Captain Haddock Day. Billions of blue blistering barnacles in a thundering typhoon, etc etc

[identity profile] catsparx.livejournal.com 2008-09-19 05:16 am (UTC)(link)
I don't see the bit where its claiming to be unconformist. All memes are conformist by their very nature. We're all conformists to some degree, no matter how special we like to pretend we are. look down. You wearing pants? You're a conformist. (note: if you're not wearing pants and you happen to be at work right now, I don't want to hear about it)

[identity profile] jack-ryder.livejournal.com 2008-09-19 05:27 am (UTC)(link)
So when is "International Leave Your Pants At Home Day"?

(oh god - I remember - it was last Tuesday - that explains a lot...)

[identity profile] catsparx.livejournal.com 2008-09-19 05:29 am (UTC)(link)
working from home... when every day is no pants day...

[identity profile] jack-ryder.livejournal.com 2008-09-19 05:30 am (UTC)(link)
Unconformist!

[identity profile] catsparx.livejournal.com 2008-09-19 05:31 am (UTC)(link)
waggles bare buttocks

[identity profile] jack-ryder.livejournal.com 2008-09-19 05:31 am (UTC)(link)
See, even you are rolling your Rs

(knew I'd get a chance to get that line out...)

[identity profile] catsparx.livejournal.com 2008-09-19 05:33 am (UTC)(link)
now that a shocker

[identity profile] ashamel.livejournal.com 2008-09-19 05:57 am (UTC)(link)
Am I missing out because no-one has ever pressured me to talk like a pirate?

[identity profile] jack-ryder.livejournal.com 2008-09-19 06:00 am (UTC)(link)
It's all right. I've given them your home address. They'll be with you tonight.

[identity profile] ashamel.livejournal.com 2008-09-19 06:01 am (UTC)(link)
Good good.

I am rather annoyed by the whole flash mobbing thing, but this seems more harmless.

[identity profile] thetathx1138.livejournal.com 2008-09-19 11:50 am (UTC)(link)
If you expect me to do the same because you do it, not fine.

You see, I would think anyone EXPECTING you to do it would be missing the point. Therein, of course, lies the problem. :-)
