There's a point in third PotC movie where you're clearly supposed to going, "Yay, Pirates! Making the oceans free!" but you're actually going "Yay, Pirates! Making the oceans free for theft, rape, murder and...wait, hang on."
"Mass-organised opportunities to “do something different”, like "International Talk Like a Pirate Day, are just another way in which peer-pressure is deployed to make people conform to certain group behaviours. Yes, you can have fun in your life — but only this kind of fun. And only today."
what a crock. Who is being *made* to do anything? Why *only* this kind of fun? why *only* today? Should I get upset when a bunch of people wish me happy birthday because everyone is conforming to peer group pressure and demanding I do it too?
yes, real pirates are bad, same as real faeries are scary and real witches were unpopular women (rather than perky teenagers in crop tops). Doesn't mean we shouldn't be allowed to play with the form.
and no, I'm not personally participating in talk like a pirate day. Can't be bothered.
I'd agree with his point if he didn't feel the need to be such a smug asshole about it. Does he also think people who go to church or attend football games or go to the movies suffer the same problem?
I don't see the bit where its claiming to be unconformist. All memes are conformist by their very nature. We're all conformists to some degree, no matter how special we like to pretend we are. look down. You wearing pants? You're a conformist. (note: if you're not wearing pants and you happen to be at work right now, I don't want to hear about it)

Stilgherrian would miss out on all coordinated and social silliness, by his argument.

As will I. Because I'm not a fan of "coordinated and social silliness" (kind of misses the point of silliness as far as I'm concerned.)

If you choose to go a football game, or church, or watch Biodome, fine. If you expect me to do the same because you do it, not fine.
I guess I'd be a little more accepting if it was "Talk like Robert Newton" day but I still have a problem with this stratified unconformity.

I'd be pissed off if people demanded I wish myself a happy birthday. "Go on - we want to hear it from your lips."
Though I'm happy to start "Talk like a Faerie" day, if only I knew what the bastards sounded like.

I am rather annoyed by the whole flash mobbing thing, but this seems more harmless.

You see, I would think anyone EXPECTING you to do it would be missing the point. Therein, of course, lies the problem. :-)
