Benefits of a Higher Education

(UPDATE - For this to make sense you must know I work at the University of Technology, Sydney.)

so I've got my lunch and I'm heading back to my desk when this delivery guy starts talking to me as they do -

DELIVERY GUY - (looking at all the graduation stuff around him) Our tax dollars at work, eh?

ME - Sorry?

(UPDATE - What I should have said was "And because there's so few of them, those dollars have to work extra hard now.")

DELIVERY GUY - I went here for five years and look at me now (shows badge on shirt sleeve identifying himself as delivery guy).

(UPDATE - I realise now he must have been talking about the NSW Institute of Technology, our predecessor.)

ME - Maybe you should give a keynote address at one of the graduations.

DELIVERY GUY - Yeah, out of a job at 28 and working as a delivery guy at 43 (he looked much older)

I'm saved from a response by the lift doors opening. We get in.

DELIVERY GUY - Say what floor is this?

ME - Level 4

DELIVERY GUY - I want level 2

ME - Well, we're going up.

Delivery guy gets out of lift, obviously having missed the colossal signs out in the foyer for graduation - THIS IS LEVEL 4, GRADUATION ON LEVEL 5

I hope I'm not as old as he is when I'm 43.

Okay this response made even less sense than the delivery guy.

Liked this post - a prime example of someone blaming 'the system' for their own addled state of existence.

Berko Wills

[livejournal.com profile] kalenture would rather be on "Big Brother" than at University.

That, to me, says a lot about the younger generation.

what proof?

that you'll wind up a delivery guy who can't read?
