Paul Haines died today

I guess we were all expecting it but all of us hoped it wouldn't happen.

I didn't know him well, but he was always great to be around - and a fabulous writer.

There will, I think, be a lot of people who 'didn't know him well' but who nonetheless have a strong sense of who he was, what he stood for. I only ever met him twice, at conventions, and I'd echo your first two sentences exactly.

And, yes, he will be missed.
