Fortunatley, I work at a place good for this stuff, so I've recently watched this. Kind'a funky but I don't think it completely gels. Having said that there were some groovy stylistic scenes, especially those with Tadanobu Asano being harrased by his dead wife. And I felt it did pay off at the end.
I do think this Japanese zaniness is a hard thing to pull off, at least from a western perspective, but I love it when it comes together like with choice Takashi Miike efforts (though not always).
So though I liked it, I didn't get the insanity buzz I felt with "Shark Skin Man and Peach Hip Girl" (also with Asano and birdman Ittoku Kishibe) or Miike's "The Happiness of the Katakuris" with the dancing zombies.
Enjoyed watching Hiroshi Abe playing against type. He seems so straight in previous films, even as villian in Godzilla 2000.
I'm becoming a big Tadanobu Asano fan (he's also in Rampo Noir and I recently caught him in Zatoichi.)
I think it's a very light superficial film (which is why I recommended it to Cat ;) ) but it's so much fun!!!!
And I love the soundtrack - got a copy from CDJapan (even though it doesn't have the crucial song at the end.)
I'll have to give Shark Skin Man and Peach Hip Girl another try (didn't watch it all the way through as it was the morning after a party and I don't think the guests were in the mood.)
And I haven't seen "The Happiness of the Katakuris" at all - it's one of the set of films that I keep just missing, either on television, video or in the cinema. I'm mixed on Miike - enjoyed Great Yokai War and Fudoh the Next Generation, but I'm reluctant to see Audition (been told I'm a pussy for avoiding it) and Ichi the Killer. Happiness of the Katakuris I'd love to see, however, as well as the original The Quiet Family (which is out on DVD I understand.)
