We're just about finished or last full day in Paris. Tomorrow we're off to Nantes.

I'm keeping a blog of the trip at http://iainllyn.blogspot.com and that's where the photos are going. Not all of the photos, mind you. We need to save some for dinner parties.

So here's a photo of the view outside our bedroom window

Though behind that is one of the busiest streets on the left bank, Blvd St Germaine.

To put it another way:

and we hope to come back soon. We've had a splendid time.

A Wedding!

jack_ryder: (Default)

[livejournal.com profile] murasaki_1966 and I are in Canberra for my brother's wedding.

Hopefully there'll be no next time this time but, if there is, let's hope the couple pick a warmer day.

Is it just me - or would the kids have burnt to death if they'd gone through the portal on Xmas day as the "caretaker" intended?

First Xmas

jack_ryder: (Default)

This weekend, we are celebrating the first of our two allocated Xmas's with [livejournal.com profile] murasaki_1966's parents - "up at the lake".

Nothing much to report, but that's the way that it is up here - a few houses have changed, a few for sale, but not much else.

We made an emergency run to a nearby Coles because vital Xmas supplies (i.e. crackers and pudding) had been left behind in the mad rush to get out the door and on the road before the mad rush, but otherwise the stay here is as uneventful (thankfully) as it always is.

Oh yes, aside from the fire engines. We were greeted by a phalanx of fire engines in full cry as we entered the final stretch. No emergency, just their usual Santa run - same time every year.

When we come up here a curious lethargy overcomes me in the afternoon. By typing these words, I'm attempting to stave it off.

I'm also making more use of the writing tools I bring with me, just in case an idea strikes. However, ideas fail to take hold on fallow ground, so the next series of lj posts, will be basically my way of refertilising.

Hope everyone's having, or about to have, a great holiday.

A view from the verandah. Quiet, isn't it?

After four nights of no sleep, endless issues with the show venue and not a few paranoid and illconsidered e-mails, I woke up on Friday - or rather got up - found myself so tired I could not contemplate going to work.

After a rather slurred message to my boss, I found my body, um, spasming as I tried to go to the toilet.

Then I found myself uttering random sounds and lying on the bed twitching.

It was that point I though I should call for an ambulance. I found it hard to push the words out. There seemed to be a disconnect between my brain and my mouth.

I thought I was having a stroke.

SPOILER: I wasn't

I had a CAT scan and a MRI and - it may surprise some people - no problems were found. The neurologists amused themselves moving my eyes around the room and hammering my extremities and a speech therapist helped me string a sentence together, but found my throat muscles weren't letting me swallow successfully.

So - a night in hospital on Nil By Mouth.

And after one night, where I actually slept, I'd pretty much recovered.

[livejournal.com profile] murasaki_1966 stayed with me the whole time (except the evening - it was a locked ward) and she was marvelous - especially as I couldn't talk to her and erupted into the occasional spasm.

So I'm out now, but I'm missing the last two shows so I can get my nervous system back under control.

And I'm going to hopefully be sleeping a fair bit.

[livejournal.com profile] murasaki_1966 and I are in Albury at the moment recovering from three days of boardgaming at Bordercon.

We've had a fabulous time - caught up with a lot of friends from all over the Australian gaming scene (and hopefully made some new ones.)

I'll be posting a fuller report as geeklist on BoardGameGeek, but as fair as I'm concerned, Neil Thomson and family have done a great job putting together the best game con I've been to.. Much better than the more commercial Australian Games Expo in Canberra on the Australia Day long weekend. For a start, we could spend most of our time playing games and less time hunting for space to play games.

tomorrow we'll be catching up with [livejournal.com profile] eneit and pushing on to Wagga Wagga - then to Cootamundra and Canberra. One of the joys of a road trip is being able to make last minute changes of plans.

Albury itself is a lovely small town so hopefully we'll come back next year - even if it means we miss the Natcon.

As I'm typing this on my iphone, you'll all have to wait until I'm back in Sydney for pictures and details. At the moment, we're just basking in the afterglow of a wonderful convention.

We've seen Auckland (mainly from the SkyTower thanks to [livejournal.com profile] i_ate_my_crusts and we've seen most of Hamilton, including the magnificent gardens and the zoo, thanks to my aunt and my cousins.

It seems we have to smuggle as many New Zealanders (or as they're known here, "locals") into Australia as we can fit in our luggage. Unfortunately, the vast range of well stocked second hand bookstores have taken care of any spare space.

Today we are off to Rotorua, then to Napier, and thence to Wellington, where more cousins and [livejournal.com profile] threemonkeys await us.

A longer, more detailed and illustrated accounting will have to wait till our return, and I will be maintaining radio silence until e next happen along a spare wifi connection such as the one thoughtfully provided by my cousins, allowing this very missive.

Hope you, the reader, are well.

Yrs sincerely etc.

The swing in the backyard of my in-laws place.

Tried to get the kookaburras, but they didn't want to know me. (The point of these posts is trying out Posterous in preparation for Worldcon.)

I'm not sure if it will accept LJ formatting so I'll test with [livejournal.com profile] murasaki_1966 who is making more meeple earrings.

{had to add that manually - it won't show up through Posterous)

Anyway - if you're going to Worldcon - please let me know in comments (so I can test those out as well.)

Typing from my new portable keyboard. Keys are a bit small and prone to repeat, so this will take some practice.

Drove down to Canberra last night with my friend Phil, who noticed (as the night started to draw its veil around us) that the headlights weren't on.

Oh shit.

For some reason the high beams were still working so we burned out the retinas of those in front of us but, hey, at least we could see them.

So, this morning I'll dump Phil at the con and hopefully get the lights repaired.

For those interested in the Australian Games Expo - here's a group blog that will be updated through the weekend.

Not sure I'll have time to catch up with friends, but [livejournal.com profile] murasaki_1966 and I will be up again for the Paris Exhibition in a month or so.
